Turf laying questions, answered
What homeowners, landlords and builders tend to ask us before a new lawn goes down. Can't see yours? Get in touch.
Quotes and booking
How do I get a quote?
Use our quote form, which asks for your contact details and a few facts about the garden, or ring us.
What affects the price?
Mainly the size of the lawn, the state of the ground, whether an old lawn needs lifting, how much topsoil is needed and how easy the garden is to reach.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. A deposit confirms your booking and is deducted from what you owe at the end; the rest is paid on the first day of work. You'll find the full detail in our terms.
Do prices include VAT?
Yes, quoted prices include VAT.
The work
What's included in a turfing job?
That depends on your garden, and your quote lists it. A typical job covers lifting the old lawn, taking the waste away, preparing and levelling the ground, then laying fresh turf and watering it in.
What if you find rubble under the lawn?
Small stones are picked out as part of preparation. Builders' rubble is priced separately, and anything extra is agreed with you before it's done.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain doesn't stop turf being laid. If the ground is waterlogged or frozen, a new date is arranged.
Do you need an outside tap?
It helps a lot, as new turf is watered in once it's laid. If there isn't one, let us know when you ask.
After laying
How often should new turf be watered?
Regularly and generously until it roots, and more often in warm or windy weather. You'll be given aftercare guidance with your lawn.
When is the first mow?
After the roots have taken hold and the grass has grown a bit. For the first cuts, raise the mower to its tallest setting.
Why can I see the joints between rolls?
Joints show for a while after laying and fade as the grass knits together and grows.
Landlords and trade
Do you work for landlords and letting agents?
Yes. Choose Landlord on the form, or Trade if you're an agent, and list any extra addresses in the notes.
I'm a builder or developer. Can you turf several plots?
Certainly. Pick Trade or Developer on the form, or call us, and we'll treat it as a trade enquiry.
Can I just buy turf?
We lay lawns rather than selling turf on its own. See Buying turf only? for pointers.
