Turf laying terms
The agreement between you and Durham Turfing for turf laying is made up of your written quote and the terms below.
Last updated 24 October 2026
1. Quotes
Your price is based on the information you give us (sizes, pictures, notes) along with whatever we see on a visit, if there is one. Each quote shows the date it runs until.
Every item is listed on its own, for example removing the existing grass, ground work, topsoil, the turf and laying it, and clearing waste. Where builders' rubble needs removing, that's a line of its own. VAT is included in every price.
Gardens sometimes hold surprises: rubble under the surface, more square metres than expected, or trickier access than described. If so, we'll stop, explain what's different and get your agreement to any added cost first.
2. Booking and paying
Accepting your quote and paying £100 books your date. That sum counts towards the total, so it's deducted from your final invoice.
Whatever remains is payable on the first day of work. Turf and materials belong to us until everything has been paid.
3. Cancelling within 14 days
Because this contract is agreed remotely or away from our premises, you have 14 days from accepting the quote to cancel, with no reason needed. Tell us by email at info@durhamturf.co.uk, or by post to the address shown in the final section of these terms.
Want us to begin sooner than that? Then we'll need you to ask in writing. Cancelling after that request but before we arrive means covering money already spent on your job that can't be recovered, such as turf harvested for you. After work has begun on site, you pay the full price.
Model wording: "I am cancelling my turf laying contract for [address], accepted on [date]. Name, address, signature (if on paper), date."
4. Moving or cancelling later
Need to move your date? The earlier you tell us the better; we'll find another day and your deposit moves with it. After the 14 days, cancelling means we keep the deposit to cover costs, and you pay for turf that has already been ordered or harvested for you.
5. Weather and scheduling
Dates are set in good faith but can shift because of frozen or sodden ground, turf availability or a previous job overrunning. If that happens we'll tell you and suggest another date that works. A typical garden takes a day; bigger or more involved gardens may need extra time.
6. Getting to the garden
Please make sure we can reach the lawn area safely, unload close by and use water. Tell us at the quote stage if the house or garage is the only route into the garden.
Buried pipes, cables, drains, soakaways and irrigation should be pointed out, and marked if possible, before we begin. We can't accept responsibility for damaging hidden services nobody mentioned that we had no reasonable way of finding.
7. About turf
Turf is grown outdoors, so its shade and texture change with the season and from one harvest to the next. Rolls can have ragged edges or come split into pieces; that's down to harvesting and isn't a defect. If the variety quoted runs out, we may lay a comparable one.
8. Looking after your lawn
Until the roots take, your new lawn needs frequent, heavy watering, and we'll explain watering and the first cut. Once it's down, whether turf establishes depends on things we can't control, such as watering, weather, soil and wear, so there's no guarantee it will root.
Worried something's wrong? Send us photos straight away and we'll do what we reasonably can.
9. Photographs
We sometimes photograph lawns before and after, for our records or as examples. People, house numbers and registration plates are kept out of shot. If you'd prefer your photos not to appear in marketing, just say.
10. Liability
We take reasonable care and use reasonable skill in our work. Should we break these terms or are careless, we're liable for loss or damage that could reasonably have been foreseen. We aren't liable for losses nobody could have foreseen, or for business losses.
These terms don't restrict any liability the law won't allow to be restricted, including for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. None of this affects your statutory rights.
11. Other points
Our privacy notice explains how we deal with personal information. We may revise these terms, and the version published on the day you accept your quote applies to your job. They are governed by the law of England and Wales.
