Ground preparation

Ground preparation and topsoil for new turf in County Durham

A lawn is only as good as the ground under it. Before any turf goes down we get the soil loose, clean and level, adding topsoil where it's thin or low, so the new lawn sits flat and roots well.

  • Rotavating

Loosening hard, compacted soil so roots can get down.

  • Levelling and raking

  • Topsoil

Brought in to raise low areas or improve thin, poor soil.

Clay, slopes and stony ground

Heavy ground

If your garden puddles after rain or bakes hard in summer, there may be clay underneath. Loosening it and working in topsoil gives new turf a better layer to root into.

Sloping gardens

Where the ground only dips slightly, turf can follow it. Steeper ones may need some levelling, or the turf pegging while it roots. Tell us about the slope and the quote will allow for it.

Stony or rubbly soil

Stones near the surface are picked out as part of preparation. Heavy rubble left by builders goes on the quote as its own item.

Questions

Questions people ask us

Do I need new topsoil?

Not always. If the existing soil is a decent depth and quality it can be prepared and used. Topsoil is added where the ground is low, thin or poor, and your quote will say if it's needed.

Can you just prepare the ground for me to lay turf myself?

Ground preparation is quoted as part of a turf laying job rather than on its own.

What about drains and cables?

Please point out anything buried in the area, such as pipes, cables, drains or soakaways, before work starts.
